As one might expect, The Dark Knight was every bit at good (if not better) than the awesomeness that was Batman Begins. The Dark Knight, however, took an entirely different turn than its predecessor. Sure, when Batman Begins came out, it was absolutely terrifying, and my boyfriend Cillian Murphy became one of the best movie villains ever as Scarecrow. Despite all of this terror, though, the movie left me feeling pretty good inside at the end, even with hints of the Joker causing terror in Gotham.
The Dark Knight did not leave me feeling good inside at all. It left me depressed and nervous and uncomfortable, which I believe it exactly what it was meant to do. While the dark comedy of the film was not lost on me (see: the Joker dressed in his nurse uniform with a Harvey Dent campaign sticker on his dress), I can't deny that I cried like a little girl throughout a good chunk of the movie. The Dark Knight forces a large amount of moral dilemas on its audience. I found myself agonizing over every decision that each character faced: "Will he or won't he? Is she really gonna do that? Is he gonna live or die?"
Life-altering decisions aside, the formal introduction of the Joker was obviously the most disturbing element of the film. Although this has been played to death already, I have to whip out the Heath Ledger card simply because I was always a huge fan of his and I had never seen him in a role quite like this before. The character of the Joker would have been upsetting even if Ledger had not passed away, but knowing about what this role did to one of the greatest actors of this generation made it all the more unsettling. Ledger's Joker cannot even be compared to Jack Nicholson's Joker from 1989's Batman. The newer Joker is even more terrifying than Scarecrow or any horror movie villain. Part of what makes him so creepy is the fact that he is totally insane, and is not commiting crimes for the money or the glory. He is 100% "batty" (see what I did there?!?) and makes it known throughout his reign of terror.
The Dark Knight will be the greatest movie of the year, hands down. The villain is scarier, the action is more... action packed, the cast is unstoppable (Mr. Ledger, plus the always kick ass Christian Bale... who has come a long way from the gay journalist in Velvet Goldmine... Morgan Freeman, and Gary Oldman, one of my very favorite), the production is unbelievable, and I have already had nightmares about the film. I can't wait for the next one. When are we getting more Poison Ivy?
Tomorrow is Daniel's birthday. Also, coming up in a couple months, we will have been together for three years. It is amazing to think that we met through such unusual circumstances (read: he was dating my ex-best friend) and that we are still in love and enjoying it.
One of the first things we did together was go to Daniel's homecoming. He asked me to go to homecoming with him before he "officially" asked me to be his girlfriend.
Daniel and I had been dating for about eight months when I got my first bunny, Penny.
He won't admit it, but he has a had a super soft spot for her ever since she was a tiny little baby ball of fluff. She won't admit her affections towards him, either. They can't hide their true feelings from me.
In 2006, I was invited to be in the family Christmas picture for the first time. :)
We went to senior prom together, obviously. I picked the purple and got my shoes dyed to match my dress and his tux.
We have been living together for almost a year now and it is awesome. I'm so happy to say that we're finally engaged and that I have landed myself one of the most thoughtful people that I have ever met.
What movies do you have memorized? Bonus points for sharing your favorite quote.
Submitted by Andymatic.
I am a master at memorizing movies. The ones that stick out are Almost Famous, Heathers and Pulp Fiction. Oh yeah, and Fight Club, too.
Most of my favorite quotes probably come from Almost Famous, which is pretty obvious since it's my favorite movie.
"Can you believe these new girls? None of them use birth control and they eat all the steak!"
"If you think that Mick Jagger will still be doing the whole rock star
thing at age fifty, well then, you are sorely, sorely mistaken."
"Never take it seriously, you never get hurt. Never get hurt, you can
always have fun. And if you ever get lonely, you just go to the record
store and visit all your friends."
"I didn't invent the rainy day, man. I just own the best umbrella."
Heathers is also highly quotable, and contains many lines that I use in everyday life, such as: "What's your damage, Heather?" and "You're such a pillowcase."
Let's not forget my very favorite line from Pulp Fiction, spoken by the one and only Mia Wallace.... "I said GODDAMN!"
The holiday weekend was great and all, except for the part where my tire shredded on the highway and looked something like this:
Totally awesome! Luckily Daniel was in the car, so he replaced the tire in question with the donut in my trunk as Caesar and I looked on from the side of I-25.
Replacing all four tires on your Grand Prix when oil prices are outrageous? $400.
Having a valid excuse not to drive back up to Denver to work the Saturday after a holiday? Priceless.
What's your favorite song with "America" or "USA" in the title? Bonus points if you share it with us.
"Let us be lovers we'll marry our fortunes together."
"I've got some real estate here in my bag."
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and Mrs. Wagner pies
And we walked off to look for America"Kathy," I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh
"Michigan seems like a dream to me now"
It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw
I've gone to look for AmericaLaughing on the bus
Playing games with the faces
She said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy
I said "Be careful his bowtie is really a camera""Toss me a cigarette, I think there's one in my raincoat"
"We smoked the last one an hour ago"
So I looked at the scenery, she read her magazine
And the moon rose over an open field"Kathy, I'm lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping
I'm empty and aching and I don't know why
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all gone to look for America
All gone to look for America
All gone to look for America
One of the things I enjoyed most about our vacation was our dolphin encounter. We were in a small group of people with two dolphins to swim with us. The price was a little steap, but it was well worth it since we are obviously lacking dolphins in Colorado.
Sadly, we only have two pictures of our time since they would not let personal cameras in the center and charged $16 EACH for the pictures they took for us. We splurged a little and got one picture of each of us.
The dolphins in our group were babies, about one year old and already 200 lbs each.
Mexico was awesome! We swam with dolphins, zip lined across the forest, swam in the ocean, got wasted at the bar in the pool (maybe that was just me), and.....
GOT ENGAGED!
That's right, after nearly three years of being together, Daniel popped the question (on June 20th, the be exact). I couldn't be happier! The diamond in my ring has been in his family for a few generations which makes me feel like the most loved girl in the universe.
He proposed to me on the beach, which was definitely romantic, but.... he dropped my ring in the sand and we lost it for about ten to fifteen minutes. I ended up finding it right next to my feet, luckily!
It will take me a million years to get all of the pictures from the trip up here, but this one will summarize how I feel:
What ten songs would you put on a summertime mix?
Summertime mixes are the best. I make them every summer, no lie. The songs that I pick for the mixes are always songs that I have fond memories of, usually involving driving around with my friends with the windows down. With all of my friends being in the Springs, I haven't had a lot of chances to do that this summer, so here's ten songs that I either enjoy alone or have older memories of.
01. Sublime - Doin' Time (a summer mix staple, you can't leave this one out)
02. The Academy Is... - Skeptics and True Believers
03. Flobots - Rise
04. Reel Big Fish - Ban the Tube Top
05. Garbage - Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)
06. The Offspring - The Kids Aren't Alright
07. The Distillers - Hall of Mirrors
08. Everclear - Local God
09. The Faint - Take Me to the Hospital
10. The Aquabats - Waterslides!
As for the last song on the list, everyone knows that it isn't really summer without the Aquabats. Really, you could add any of their songs to the list, but this song brings the rest of the list down to a nice, easy pace. It's actually one of my favorites off of Charge!!
Daniel and I leave for Mexico in two days. AWESOME!
I am not always a huge fan of remixes. Often they are too long, too repetitve, and simply too ridiculous for me. Every once in a while, though, there is a remix that is by far better than the original song. I think that this is the case with this remix of "Dare" by Gorillaz. The guitar in this mix gets me dancing no matter what I'm doing. Obviously this means that the mission of the remix has been accomplished.
It is also a little known fact that I totally LOVE Gorillaz. There, you learned something new today.
In other news: one week until I leave for Mexico!
*shudders* I'm not a fan of clowns either... of course, if I had someone to see the movie with, I'm... read more
